He is a distinguished Indian poet and writer in Hindi. He was Professor and Head in Gorakhpur University until his retirement in 2001. Prof. Tiwari has approximately 50 published books to his credit in different genres like criticism, poetry collections, travelogue and edited books. Some of his important publications are Kavita Kya Hai, Alochana Ke Hashiye Par (criticism), Shabd Aur Shatabdi, Phir Bhi Kuch Rah Jayega (poetry collections), Antheen Aakash (travelogue), Mahadevi Rachana Sanchayan, Beesvin Shatabdi Ka Hindi Sahitya, Agyeya Patravali (edited books) etc. Besides He has contributed around 400 poems, articles, reminiscences, travelogues, review etc. in reputed magazines and journals published all over India. He has been editing Dastavez, a quarterly magazine being published from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh since 1978 and till now more than 150 issues have been published, which includes approximately three dozen special issues of historical importance. Prof. Vishwanath Prasad Tiwari is the recipient of many prestigious awards and honours including Saraswati Samman (twice), Vyas Samman from K.K. Birla Foundation, Hindi Gaurav Samman, Sahitya Bhushan Samman, Pushkin Samman from Bharat Mitra Santathan, Moscow, Russia etc. He has been a member of Executive Board, Research Board and Committee for preparing syllabus in several Universities. Presently, he is the President of Sahitya Akademi, National Academy of Letters.
